DEMOCRACY GONE WILD

Posted by nicolen on June 18, 2008

Freedom of Speech is cherished – I understand that. But…has the internet provided a forum for speech that shouldn’t be free? Is there a point where government must draw the line?

‘Democracy gone wild’
Hate speech infests online versions of local daily newspapers
06/12/2008

For the person behind the moniker “Viking Knight,” the Internet is a virtual playground for hate.
“Mexican’ts are a b…stard race and will come to nothing in the end. WHITE POWER FOREVER,” Viking Knight wrote in response to the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy. “Somebody saved the LAPD the trouble of icing this ‘vato.’ … He is one less Mexie on the planet, not that it counts for much.”

On the beating of an Orthodox Jew by skinheads in North Hollywood: “We should offer a reward to the guy who off’d this Christ-killer. … Jew$ are a disease.”

On the death of an Armenian girl who was denied a liver transplant by her health insurance company: “God got rid of one the Turks missed. Too bad He doesn’t get rid of all of them.”

A person might expect to find these and other vile comments by Viking Knight — including slurs against gays and Asians — posted on a white supremacist or neo-Nazi Web site.

But the banner on the top of the page belongs to the Daily News of Los Angeles, and in other cases to its MediaNews Group sister paper, the Pasadena Star-News.

Like dozens of other people who post comments through these and other newspaper Web sites, Viking Knight can remain as anonymous as he or she wishes to be. And due to the anonymity and instant access to an audience that poorly monitored newspaper and social networking sites provide, Internet hate speech is a growing national phenomenon.

“It’s democracy gone wild,” said Deborah Lauter, director of the national civil rights division of the Anti-Defamation League. She’s hoping the Daily News and the Star-News will remove racist diatribes from the Web and be more vigilant about hate speech in the future.

“Unfortunately, we believe now that many more papers are offering this kind of [comment] service we are going to see an increase in that kind of hate rhetoric. While it is protected speech, we believe it is incumbent on a newspaper or a social networking site to step up and be a responsible corporation, and be more active in moderating [its Web site] and taking down what is clearly hate speech,” said Lauter. “Once they decide to create that forum, then they have to act responsibly and monitor it.”

The Daily News and Star-News Web sites allow any reader to post his or her views through a service called Topix, which allows discussion forums to be built around news articles and other subjects.
“It is impossible for any paper our size to read all the comments every day, so this is an issue often discussed [among the 57 MediaNews Group daily newspapers, many of which use Topix],” said Ryan Garfat, online editor of the Daily News.

Garfat said the paper typically relies on Web users to flag hate speech and other abusive posts through Topix, which forwards those complaints to editors. He said Tuesday that he plans to remove hate speech identified by this newspaper, but is already dealing with dozens of reader complaints about other posts — some of which aren’t hate speech at all.

Garfat also said that there were no plans to change how the Web site is monitored.

“The unfortunate effects of having an open forum are that these things are going to happen, and we feel they reflect poorly on the identity of the newspaper. But if we take the alternate route of eliminating comments, then I think we are not fulfilling our goal of allowing legitimate discussion within our community and would be disserving our community by doing that.”

The Star-News has had far fewer problems with online hate speech than the Daily News — the source of the three comments quoted above — and removed posts that contained hate speech following conversations with the Pasadena Weekly.

“Our policy for the comments is that we do not moderate or edit the comments before they’re posted online. However, we will remove comments that are deemed to be offensive or inappropriate,” said San Gabriel Valley Newspaper Group Senior Editor Frank Pine, who supervises the Star-News, Whittier Daily News and San Gabriel Valley Tribune.

Pine said he was not aware of Viking Knight’s hateful posts until hearing from this newspaper, and that the only complaints about comments made over the Internet had been from sources in news stories who felt they were being characterized unfairly.

Although Topix terms of service prohibit content that is “hateful, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable,” it also warns that users “may be exposed to content that is offensive, indecent or objectionable.”

Topix is a Palo Alto-based limited liability corporation owned largely by publishing giants the Gannett Co., The McClatchy Co. and the Tribune Co., according to its Web site.  The Web site for the Los Angeles Times does not use Topix, and reader comments appear to be monitored to exclude hate speech.

At the Star-News site, Viking Knight makes it clear in one anti-affirmative action rant that he’s no fan of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, and in a separate post appears to advocate that Obama be assassinated.

“Robert Kennedy sold our courageous men in uniform out when he became a peacenik. He sold White people out when he started kissing up to the likes of Chavez, Dr. King, the mestizo farmworkers, etc. Sirhan may not be a prize, but he was just what America needed, just when we needed him,” wrote Viking Knight in response to a column by Star-News Public Editor Larry Wilson about Kennedy’s Pasadena-bred assassin. “As we approach the November elections, we could use a man like Sirhan again.”

“That post is clearly over the line,” Pine said Monday. On Tuesday it had been removed from the site, along with other posts disparaging Latino youth.

“As shocking as these kinds of things are, they are increasingly common on perfectly mainstream Web sites. Usually the paper will step in and scrub their sites of this kind of material, because if they didn’t they would become absolute nesting grounds for white supremacists. These guys are looking for a place to safely transmit their ideology and bring more people into the movement,” said Mark Potok, editor of Intelligence Report, a magazine that monitors hate groups and is produced by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Potok said that he’s been forced to keep a close eye on his magazine’s blog (www.splcenter.org/blog) to prevent hateful comments from being posted. People have even tried to post racially motivated threats to assassinate Obama, which he has reported to the Department of Homeland Security.
In the United States, constitutional free speech protections typically prevent legal action on hate speech unless someone is threatening or urging others to physically harm a person or racial group, said Potok, who recently testified before the Helsinki Commission (also known as the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe) about threats posed by Internet hate speech.

Potok was testifying not only as an expert, but also as a victim: A neo-Nazi group once identified him on a Web site as an enemy of their cause and posted his home address. But because the group did not specifically order its readers to do Potok harm, they didn’t break the law.

In Europe and most other Western nations, hate speech — in Germany, denying or trivializing the Holocaust — can be prosecuted as a crime. As a result, said Potok, the majority of foreign-language white supremacist Web sites are hosted through computer servers in the United States.

Viking Knight also took aim through the Star-News at the social services organization El Centro de Acción Social, which he or she wrote on May 31 “is nothing but a Reconquista terrorist organization dedicated to the destruction of America.”

The next day, in response to another reader’s concern about the achievement levels of some students receiving scholarships from the organization, Viking Knight wrote: “They’re Mexican’ts, What did you expect? Their grades suck because in most high schools, you can’t major in Lowriding 101.”

El Centro Executive Director Randy Jurado Ertll said he thinks the Star-News should prevent racist comments like these — which were pulled from the site after Pine spoke with the Weekly — from reaching readers.

“Responsibility comes with freedom of expression,” said Ertll. “I was just disgusted by this. We need to be vigilant of people who use hate language. Just as we denounce hate crimes, we have to denounce hate language. Words impact people’s actions and influence others to promote more hate.”

But it doesn’t end there. One conversation chain from the Daily News involving Viking Knight and others was so rife with prejudice against a Latino teen shot to death at a party — “like all the rest of the scum too hell he went too face satan,” wrote catwomomen4u69 —  that someone claiming to be the victim’s ex-girlfriend was actually pleading with people to stop.

“Certainly we could do a better job of moderating comments,” said Garfat, who acknowledged that recent staffing cuts have affected the paper’s ability to monitor the Web site. “But, I still maintain the need to allow people to have conversations supersedes the vile comments that sometimes permeate our boards. We work with what we’ve got.”

In another conversation that devolved into slurs against “Mexicans and blacks,” someone wrote: “It’s time for a good old fashion clan meeting … come on my arean [sic] brothers … lets get out our rebel flags and let the lynching begin.”

Such vitriol targeting Latinos in general or people perceived to be illegal aliens is, sadly, “very much par for the course,” in terms of hate speech to be found on mainstream Web sites, said Potok.

“We’re in a whole new age,” said the ADL’s Lauter. “The anonymity of the Internet provides a forum so the people who wouldn’t have the proclivity to say it in public can hide behind screens. We used to say the Klan hid behind their white hoods; these [people] hide behind their screens.”

And in many ways, newspapers are behind the times in figuring out how to respond.

“There’s a larger issue in this story,” said Pine, “that is, to what degree should newspaper Web sites allow people to comment anonymously. It’s something that warrants further scrutiny. Certainly it’s a conversation we’ve been having in the newsroom and will continue to have.”

Pine and Garfat said they are reluctant to restrict comments until they are screened or increase registration requirements, as that would hinder access to the service. “We want to facilitate the free exchange of ideas and have people feeling comfortable speaking their minds, but on the other hand you don’t want people to hide behind anonymity and use it to promote hatred and say things that have no place in civilized public discourse,” he said.

That such vicious comments sat for more than a week on the Web sites of local daily newspapers angers Nat Nehdar, a friend of the Pasadena Human Relations Commission and its former chair, who dedicates much of his time to activities combating prejudice, hate and violence.

“I feel strongly that newspapers should more carefully monitor their Web sites and eliminate such trash, which in some ways can reflect on the newspaper itself. If you allow it you are not condemning it, so it seems like you are condoning this type of hate speech,” he said.

WHEN LOVE & HATE COLLIDE

VIEW PICTURES OF THE DAY HERE

wbc.jpgFred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church groups thought they would bring their message of hate to Oklahoma and to Tinker Airforce Base today – but they found out that a little love speaks much louder than they.

csi.jpg

Initially, police had placed both sides behind barricades more than a half block apart. Police maintained a strong presence though not nearly as strong as that found at, let’s say, a neo-Nazi rally.

Fred Phelps, notorious for picketing the funerals of our fallen soldiers brought his contingent to the heartland after a tragic shooting at Tinker Airforce Base claimed the lives of two small children and their father, a decorated war veteran, in a murder-suicide.  Claiming that God is punishing America for allowing gays in the military and turning the country into a modern day Sodom and Gamorrah. On his website, announcement of the planned protest stated that God had put the gun in the father’s hands.

While there were only 9 or 10 present in his group, they brandished different signs, all reprehensible, throughout the protest, most of which was expected. However there was a collective gasp among onlookers as signs reading “Kill More Kids” and “Pray For More Dead Soldiers” were displayed. But the real story in all of this is what happened in the street and on the sidewalk.

wbc3.jpgAs I approached the anti-Fred Phelps group about 30 minutes prior to the start-time, there was something very special in the air. There were approximately 30 protestors already gathered and that number swelled to near 100 by the end of the event. But, the feeling of love and togetherness was almost palpable. They told me that, above all, they support the troops and that they were all about love not hate. But, they didn’t have to tell me that – because amid the traffic and the noise, there was a peacefulness that you couldn’t help but feel emanating from this group of very young people.

I411134-r1-010-3a_005.jpgn contrast to the youth, a familiar sight rode in just as the drama was beginning to unfold…the Viet Nam Veterans group of bikers who have dogged Phelps and his hateful army ever since he started ingratiating himself into the private and somber burying of our war-dead. They came right down the middle of the street and everyone cheered knowing that they make an awesome presence for our side – and they didn’t let us down.

100_2304_0004_004.jpgAs the Westboro Baptist Church spewed their venom, the bikers turned their backs. As the hideous words were shouted they were drowned out by the revving of engines. Wearing grim faces of determination and disgust, the bikers stood tall in the face of one of the most evil little group of haters ever to be seen in the likes of the heartland. Not only did their presence command attention and appreciation – their presence reinforced the message of love of both country and our people. Their presence signified the generations who have come before and brought with it a unification of the old and the young…a bridging of all gaps that might have once existed.

Even that wasn’t the whole story, however. The street in front of the gates into Tinker Air Force base is a major thouroughfare as it is also a major artery onto and off of I40. It is also Midwest City’s main shopping area and the protest was planned, probably by design, for the lunch-hour. While there about 100 protestors on the sidewalk – there were hundreds of cars on the street honking their horns, shouting, and making their displeasure with Phelps known. It was pretty incredible.

As Citizens Against Hate we were not kept behind the barricades and we mingled freely with the protestors, police, and press. Lacy Montgomery, head of Teens Against Hate, is responsible for most of the excellent photos displayed and we thank her for making the trip into OKC.

In closing, the Westboro Baptist Church met their match today in Oklahoma and the message of love not hate was communicated loudly and firmly. While Fred Phelps only controls a handful of members his message is particularly heinous. Watching young children – very young children – brandish placards announcing that “God Sent the Killer” or “Fags Doom Nations” caused a lot of mouths to drop and a lot of people to stop just to see if they head seen that right. One can only wonder what sort of life these children have and what sort of adults they will become.

There was one arrest today that we know of. An onlooker was so outraged by the signs and the message that he crossed over into the WBC area. Police spent a lot of time trying to calm him down and finally put him in a police car. Sadly, while I abhor violence, I can almost understand his rage. But, the rule of the day was love – you could feel it – almost taste it – and it was glorious.

A FULL GALLERY OF THE PROTEST WILL BE AVAILABLE THIS EVENING – SO CHECK BACK.

THE PRICE OF FREE SPEECH…

Posted by nicolen on January 17, 2008

Feedom of speech is cherished in this country, as it should be. Most people who are sane, rational, educated, and imbued with a modicum of integrity realize that with such rights there comes a certain degree of responsibility. However, when those who fall short in any of those areas decide to wave a banner and orate from a dais or tree stump we can expect there is a cost to the rest of us.

That cost may be extracted in the form of hurt feelings, civil or racial unrest, bruised psyches, and yes…even dollars. The following article appeared in the City Pulse in Lansing, Michigan and demonstrates the inherent dangers of racism and racist reasoning as well as the cost to others when administrators are hamstrung between the rock and a hard place. Black Hats on Campus E-mail
Written by David Holthouse
Wednesday, 16 January 2008
Preston Wiginton is one busy neo-Nazi.

In October 2005, he won the “Strongest Skinhead” contest at Hammerfest, a racist skinhead festival in Draketown, Ga., where he announced that he was organizing secret paramilitary training in preparation for the coming race war. In the following days, Wiginton posted more than 300 messages to the white nationalist online forum Stormfront, writing in one that “beating down a mud,” or non-white, is a “righteous act of collective preservation.”

Since then, Wiginton has continued to appear at white supremacist events across the United States — and abroad, too. Just this Nov. 4, Wiginton spoke to a crowd of 5,000 Russian ultranationalists at a Moscow rally against non-white immigration that included calls for Serbian-style ethnic cleansing. Waving his black cowboy hat, the Victoria, Texas, resident said, “I’m taking my hat off as a sign of respect for your strong identity in ethnicity, nation and race.” The audience responded with Nazi salutes and chants of “White power!” in English.

But Wiginton, ever the activist, has not neglected smaller venues. A mere 10 days before the Moscow rally, Wiginton served as master of ceremonies at an appearance in East Lansing, by British Holocaust denier Nick Griffin, the national chairman of the white supremacist British National Party.

This time, Wiginton’s venue was not a skinhead keg party, backwoods cross burning or neo-Nazi rally on foreign soil. It was a lecture hall on the campus of Michigan State University.

Kyle Bristow (far right) and four other members of YAF-MSU (who declined to be identified) protesting Sen. McCain’s appearance Sunday at the Kellogg Center over his position on illegal immigration (E.J. Jocque/City Pulse).

Wiginton, 43, is not a Michigan State University student. He’s not an alumnus or a faculty member, either. But he is chummy with MSU junior Kyle Bristow, the 21-year-old chairman of the Michigan State University chapter of Young Americans for Freedom, or MSU-YAF — the only university student organization in the country listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Acting in collusion with elder white supremacists like Wiginton, and with the financial and logistical support of a major conservative foundation, Bristow and a handful of cronies have roiled their campus and the surrounding community by hosting speakers like Griffin, issuing vicious homophobic and racist insults, and staging publicity stunts masked as political demonstrations that seem inspired in equal parts by the movie “Animal House” and the Hitler Youth.

“He’s become a divisive force,” former MSU-YAF member Kari Lynn Jaksa, an MSU junior who describes herself as a Republican with strong libertarian leanings, says of Bristow. “Frankly, he’s embarrassing.”

A YAF a Minute
In November 2006, MSU-YAF organized a “Straight Power” demonstration in downtown Lansing to protest a proposed local civil rights ordinance (which passed unanimously) protecting gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgener individuals from discrimination on the basis of their sexual orientation. YAF members carried signs that read “End Faggotry” and “Go Back in the Closet.”

Also last year, Bristow and Wiginton co-administered two racist online groups — “True American Patriot” and “Jobs a White Man Won’t Do” — within the Facebook social network. (The pair also share a fondness for black cowboy hats. Bristow wore his while anti-racist protesters outside the MSU building where Griffin spoke on Oct. 26 beat a piñata effigy of Griffin with sticks.)

MSU-YAF has since cosponsored a “Catch an Illegal Immigrant Day” contest, held a “Koran Desecration” competition, jokingly threatened to distribute smallpox-infested blankets to Native American students, and posted “Gays Spread AIDS” fliers across campus.

Last spring, when the MSU leftist group Students for Economic Justice hosted a lecture by a Colombian labor organizer detailing allegations of union busting and murder by the owners of Coca-Cola bottling plants in South America, Bristow and his minions jeered, waved American flags and conspicuously guzzled from large bottles of Coke while the speaker tearfully described witnessing his best friend being gunned down by paramilitary thugs.

“YAF’s ridiculous tactics are making all conservatives at MSU look bad,” Jaksa, an international relations major, told the Intelligence Report. “It’s gotten to the point where I hate to even say I’m a conservative anymore in class discussions or private conversations, because people automatically assume that I’m with Kyle Bristow. It’s important to me that people know there are sane conservatives on this campus. We’re not all racists and fascists.”

Jaksa said that when she joined MSU-YAF her freshman year, “It was basically just the action wing of the College Republicans.” Now, according to Jaksa and other sources, the College Republicans at MSU have asked Bristow to stop attending their meetings.

“We protested in favor of fiscal and social conservatism. We held demonstrations against liberal senators who voted a way on a bill that we didn’t agree with. But our agenda was very much what I could categorize as mainstream Republican,” Jaksa said. “That was before Kyle took it over [in spring 2006] and YAF went off the deep end.”

Friends in High Places
Despite its notoriety, MSU-YAF is widely supported by mainstream conservative politicians and power brokers in Michigan. The group was influential enough in rallying support for the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative — the deceptively named affirmative action ban that Michigan voters approved in 2006 — that MCRI Executive Director Jennifer Granz thanked MSU-YAF by name in her election night victory speech.

Last May 2, a few days after the SPLC named MSU-YAF a hate group — a move that received a great deal of public attention in the state — Michigan Republican Party Chairman Saul Anuzis endorsed MSU-YAF and defended Bristow on a talk radio show. “This [Bristow] is exactly the type of young kid we want out there,” Anuzis said. “I’ve known Kyle for years, and I can tell you I have never heard him say a racist or bigoted or sexist thing, ever.”

In fact, Bristow and his minions frequently single out and ridicule individual MSU gay, lesbian, and non-white students online, posting their photos and calling them “freaks,” “scum” and “savages.” Last September, Bristow criticized MSU’s decision to establish a Chicano/Latino Studies doctoral program in a news release headlined, “MSU Offers Doctorate in Savagery.”

And last March 31, roughly one month before Anuzis defended Bristow against accusations of bigotry, Bristow posted this comment on the MSU-YAF Web site: “If Christopher Columbus didn’t bring civilization to the Americas, the Indians would still be running through forests in loincloths, scalping each other, shoving bones through their noses, worshipping pagan gods, and spreading syphilis. Thank God Christopher Columbus put an end to this backward culture.”

Bristow politely refused a request to be interviewed for this article, saying that his “legal counsel” had advised him against such an interview because he’s considering legal action against the SPLC, which publishes the Intelligence Report, for defamation.
But there are some clues to his personality.

In a recent online dating profile, Bristow wrote that he plans to enroll in law school after he graduates from MSU in the fall of 2008 with a degree in international relations. Among his hobbies are “conservative politics,” “watching the History or Court TV channels,” “shooting my pellet gun” and “looking at my coin collection.”
Several MSU students who’ve been in classes with Bristow described him as a classmate who participated infrequently in seminar discussions, rarely asked questions and generally kept his political views to himself.

Jaksa, the former MSU-YAF member, said that she and Bristow hung out together quite a bit during their first year at MSU. “He was just a relaxed, normal kid at the beginning of our freshman year,” Jaksa said. “But then he underwent this odd transition. You know how most people, when they get to college, either move to the center or become more liberal in terms of their political beliefs? Well, Kyle did the opposite. It was like he kept moving farther and farther to the right to counterbalance all the people around him he saw moving to the left.”

Ted Madsen, another MSU international relations major who’s now in his junior year, said that he first met Bristow a few days after their freshman year began in the fall of 2005. “He struck me as very driven and very strait-laced,” recalled Madsen. “He was quite vocal about the fact that he was against drinking and smoking but, all in all, he was a fairly likeable guy.”

Bristow in Power
In spring 2006, shortly after he assumed control of MSU-YAF, Bristow ran unopposed and was elected to represent James Madison College — the college attended by all international relations majors — on the Associated Students of Michigan State University, or ASMSU, the university’s student government body.

Just before the academic year ended, Bristow posted his 13-point agenda online. It included these goals: “Hunt down illegal immigrants in the Lansing area and have them deported”; “Eliminate funding for all non-heterosexual student organizations”; “Create a Caucasian Caucus and give them representation on the ASMSU”; and “Eliminate representation to ASMSU for all of the following groups: Alliance of LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender] Students; the Arab Cultural Society; the Black Council; the International Students Association; the Women’s Council; the North American Indigenous Student Organization,” and practically every other non-white, non-heterosexual, or non-Christian student group at MSU.

“I was outraged when I saw it,” said Madsen. “I told him, ‘Your agenda of hate has got to stop, Kyle.’ He’s used that phrase repeatedly in a mocking fashion since.”

Madsen gave Bristow a choice: “Either resign and apologize to the James Madison community for fouling our name, or be removed from office.” Bristow did not resign and did not apologize. It took Madsen and his supporters only two days to gather enough signatures on a recall petition to force a vote, which took place in the fall of 2006, at the beginning of Bristow’s sophomore year. Ninety-six percent of the James Madison students who cast ballots voted to recall Bristow. He was forced to relinquish his seat on the ASMSU.

“I don’t regret it [leading the recall effort], although I do realize that his being recalled only further marginalized and radicalized Kyle to the point where he’s become a joke to many people,” said Madsen. “YAF is routinely ridiculed and mocked on campus, but what many people who refuse to take Kyle seriously may not realize is that Kyle believes all press coverage is good coverage, and while 10,000 people who read what he has to say will be disgusted, one or two will be intrigued. He’s using the media coverage to reach those one or two people at a time and that’s what concerns me about YAF, because what he’s articulating is dangerous.”

The University’s Role
Whatever its potential harm to society, MSU-YAF’s offensive antics have pinned university administrators between the rock of protecting free speech and the hard place of encouraging multiculturalism. For now MSU-YAF remains a registered and officially sanctioned student organization, meaning it’s entitled to certain benefits, including the free use of MSU facilities and university accounting services.

MSU also has to pay for security at YAF events, which invariably draw heated protests. Last April, for example, the university shelled out $3,780 to rent metal detectors for one night to place at every entrance to a YAF-sponsored lecture by nativist extremist leader Chris Simcox, founder of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, a border vigilante group.

Simcox was introduced to an unruly crowd by Jason Van Dyke, a neo-Confederate lawyer based in Denton, Texas. Van Dyke once attended MSU but did not graduate. By his own account, he was kicked out in 2000 after being arrested for domestic violence, possession of a banned weapon and firearm safety violations. (Van Dyke said he was merely transporting a rifle across campus on the first day of hunting season.) Also, according to Van Dyke, MSU police found extremist literature, including the race war fantasy novel The Turner Diaries and the anti-Semitic Protocols of the Elders of Zion, in his on-campus residence.

When he attended MSU, Van Dyke was a hotly controversial columnist for the State News, an MSU student newspaper. Now, like a former high school football star haunting his old campus, trying to relive the glory days, Van Dyke posts daily rah-rah messages on the MSU-YAF Web site and often travels to East Lansing for MSU-YAF happenings. He and Bristow often wear matching black cowboy hats.

When MSU-YAF held its “Koran Desecration” contest last August, Van Dyke offered this entry: “I would catch Osama Bin Laden and then take a power drill and hollow out a section of the Koran as he was forced to watch. After doing this, I would cut Osama Bin Laden’s genitals off with a rusty hacksaw, place them in the hollowed-out Koran, wrap it in an American flag infected with smallpox, and send the whole package directly to Mecca.”

Van Dyke was equally statesmanlike at the Simcox lecture, which was initially attended by about 40 Simcox supporters and about 100 anti-Simcox protesters, many if not most of them Latino MSU students. Addressing the protesters, Van Dyke said: “Remember, the First Amendment gives you the right to use four-letter words. So I have two more words for you: ‘work’ and ‘soap.’”

Already tense, the situation in the lecture hall erupted. Protesters banged on seats and shouted angrily, preventing Simcox from speaking. MSU police arrested five demonstrators and cleared the room of anyone they perceived to be anti-Simcox, which included virtually all Latinos. This in turn led to allegations of racial profiling, since the campus police officers allowed white protesters to stay.

One week after the Simcox event, a group of 11 students filed a formal complaint with the MSU Office for Inclusion and Intercultural Initiatives. They accused MSU-YAF of violating the university’s anti-discrimination policy, which prohibits the bias-motivated harassment of any “University community member” but includes this caveat: “These prohibitions are not intended to abridge University community members’ rights of free expression or other civil rights.”

The complaint filed against MSU-YAF accuses the group of “systematically — as a matter of regular organization practice — targeting groups and individuals for harassment, intimidation and public ridicule.”

University officials declined to discuss the complaint with the Intelligence Report, citing a pending investigation.

Behind the YAF Brand
Young Americans for Freedom was originally a centralized organization of rabidly anti-communist university student groups created in 1960 by National Review founder William F. Buckley. The original incarnation of YAF was also strictly opposed to the civil rights movement and, in 1962, gave its first annual Freedom Award to segregationist South Carolina Sen. Strom Thurmond.

YAF remained active nationwide through the 1980s, but is now essentially moribund. The YAF national headquarters Web page consists of a notice of sadness at the “recent news” of Ronald Reagan’s death, which occurred in June 2004. Now, Young Americans for Freedom is basically just a brand name for radical right-wing student activism, taking form as a loose and decentralized network of campus chapters, each one appearing to act independently.

In fact, the YAF brand is being co-opted and promoted by the Leadership Institute, a hard-line conservative nonprofit organization based in Arlington, Va., that is dedicated, according to its mission statement, to “identifying, recruiting, training and placing conservatives within the public policy process in the U.S. and abroad.” Republican National Committee executive committee member Morton Blackwell — who orchestrated a campaign against Anita Hill at the University of Oklahoma after she came forward with sexual harassment allegations against then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas — founded the Leadership Institute in 1979 and is still its president. Major donors include the Coors Foundation and Rich DeVos, founder of the troubled Amway multilevel marketing firm.

Christian Coalition founder Ralph Reed and disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff were both trained by the Leadership Institute, as was Jeff Gannon, the fake White House news correspondent who lobbed softball questions for President Bush from 2003 until 2005. That’s when it was revealed that Gannon had been a gay prostitute before attending the Leadership Institute Broadcast School of Journalism, after which he somehow obtained White House press credentials as a reporter for “Talon News,” Gannon’s one-man operation.

Bristow and Van Dyke both interned at the Leadership Institute last summer. There are currently more than 20 YAF organizations on campuses across the country, most of them started in the past five years by Leadership Institute-trained activists. (The Campus Leadership Program division of the Leadership Institute, according to its Web site, “fosters permanent, effective, conservative student organizations on college campuses across America.”) MSU-YAF is by far the most radical. Its most recent event, the lecture by British National Party Chairman Nick Griffin, was promoted by overtly white supremacist organizations including the American Renaissance newsletter, the Council of Conservative Citizens, and Stormfront. Attending the Griffin lecture incognito were members of the European-American Unity and Rights Organization, a white nationalist group founded by former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke, as well as members of the Keystone State Skinheads and the National Alliance, both neo-Nazi organizations that promote violence against non-whites, non-heterosexuals and Jews.

The only violence surrounding the Griffin event, however, was directed at MSU-YAF when a handful of its members were chased by an angry mob of anti-racist activists afterward. Bristow claimed members of the mob were carrying baseball bats and pieces of lumber. No injuries were reported.

Demeaning MSU?
MSU President Lou Anna Simon has been fairly tight-lipped on the ongoing MSU-YAF controversy. Reacting to the MSU-YAF sponsored “Catch an Illegal Immigrant Day” back in September 2006, Simon chided MSU-YAF for sponsoring an event she described as “demeaning to individuals and to the values of Michigan State University.”
But Oct. 25, the day before Griffin’s lecture, Simon issued a statement making it clear that putting up with racist propaganda is the price that a university must pay if it is committed to free speech.

“A university should be an open marketplace for the free exchange of ideas,” Simon said. “There are individuals who speak at campus events whose rhetoric and ideas I find reprehensible, and although I may not appreciate their positions, I do respect their right to share their views. The more extreme the view, in either direction, the more it tests us.

“Although we may disagree with one another’s positions, we must respect the rights of individuals to express their positions without fear of intimidation or physical harm. … Acts intended to prohibit the free speech rights of any individual or group, such as destroying informational materials, preventing access to an event, or shouting down a speaker do not support this philosophy and undermine our efforts to encourage robust intellectual discourse.”

MSU student Claudia Gonzalez experienced Bristow’s favorite mode of discourse first-hand when she participated in a protest outside an MSU-YAF event featuring anti-immigration hardliner Tom Tancredo, a Republican congressman from Colorado. “He [Bristow] came up to me and told me, ‘The one thing I’m most proud of is that my granddaddy stole Aztlan from your granddaddy,’” Gonzalez said.

Shortly after that exchange, MSU-YAF named Gonzalez “Leftist Freak of the Year” and posted her photo online. A few days later, the San Bernardino, Calif.-based hate group Save Our State posted her home address, phone number and parents’ home address, along with the message, “Please go and express your views.”

“I don’t feel completely safe on campus or at my home anymore because of YAF,” Gonzalez said. “And neither do a lot of other students of color and GLBT students, because YAF is clearly networking with these other hate groups, and they’re basically issuing an open invitation to skinheads and [anti-immigration] vigilantes and Nazis to come to MSU, who otherwise would never step foot on campus. … If it weren’t for YAF, MSU wouldn’t be on the hate group radar. But now it is.”

The Ron Paul Revulsion

Posted by nicolen on November 16, 2007

THE RON PAUL REVULSION

By Nicole Nichols

Fanatics of any kind piss me off. Their zealous aggressiveness, patently plastic approach, and dogmatically blinding perceptions are enough to make me just want to hurl. Can we all agree that extremism, in any form is a turn-off and can be detrimental both to the extremist and the victims of that extremism? Good…I thought so.

The last few months of trying to follow these presidential hopefuls has found me, more often than not, in the Ron Paul melee. Why? Because of the fanatical and sometimes boisterous antics of his supporters and his own refusal to allay the concerns that have arisen regarding the racists, loons, and genuine extremists who are bolstering his internet presence. For an instant, it looked as if those bullies and loud-mouths were going to steamroll right over those who dared to speak disparagingly about their messiah. That would have been interesting considering that Paul is somewhat of a Constitutionalist and wants to protect our rights to free speech. Uh…huh.

Before I begin to fillet Ron Paul and some of his supporters, let me issue a disclaimer. Not everyone supporting Ron Paul is a racist, nut-job, or fanatic. There…that’s done.

Consider, if you will, the ideology behind racist groups. They are against big government. They value their privacy. Many ascribe to the idea of state’s rights above all else. Many believe that taxation is illegal. Some desire segregation while others favor deportation or even genocide. They despise minorities and especially folks of the Jewish persuasion. Generally speaking, they deplore multiculturalism and non-white immigration into this country. So…what is it about Ron Paul that draws them into his backyard? In all seriousness…you have to look at the man and what he stands for to see the whole picture.

In a wonderfully researched article Andrew Walden, of American Thinker, has chronicled the racist and extremist support that has attached itself to the Ron Paul campaign. Walden accurately points out that most political candidates would do anything and everything possible to distance themselves from many of the people who are supporting Dr. Paul. However, it seems that distancing is not going to happen.

Let’s look at some of those extremists a little more closely.

WILLIS CARTO

Willis Carto, now in his 70’s, hails from the far right wing of American politics. He was heavily influenced by philosopher Francis Parker Yockey…who sympathized with Nazi War Criminals while prosecuting them at the Nuremburg Trials. He also argued for a race-based path for the preservation of western culture.

Carto founded the Liberty Lobby which has been sued out of existence. He now runs a newspaper entitled “American Free Press” which focuses on conspiracy theories, economics and Israel.

He acquired what was left of the Youth For Wallace group and turned it into an openly racist organization called the “National Alliance Youth,” which later became the National Alliance under the control of Dr. William Luther Pierce, the author of the “Turner Diaries.”

Carto, himself is a Holocaust denier, and promotes others who engage in the same kind of “revisionist” thinking. He joined in the signing of “The New Orleans Protocol” at the 2004 conclave put together by David Duke upon his release from prison. The protocol seeks to make the Duke brand of racism more mainstream.

Carto also publishes many of Ron Paul’s writings.

IN CARTO’S OWN WORDS…

“Who is using who [sic]? Who is calling the shots? History supplies the answer to this. History tells us plainly who our Enemy is. Our Enemy today is the same Enemy of 50 years ago and before — and that was before Communism. The Communists are ‘using’ the Jews we are told. . . . [W]ho was ‘using the Jews 50 years ago –100 or 1,000 years ago. History supplies the answer. The Jews came first and remain Public Enemy No. 1. “Hitler’s defeat was the defeat of Europe. And of America. . . . The blame . . . must be laid at the door of the international Jews.”“If Satan himself… had tried to create a… force for the destruction of the nations, he could have done no better than to invent the Jews.”

DAVID DUKE

David Duke is the former Grand Wizard of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. Duke won election to the Louisiana State Legislature and ran for president twice as both a Democrat and a Republican. (Interesting how if they don’t get in the door of one party, they just switch.)

“According to Wikipedia, “It is alleged that using the pseudonym Dorothy Vanderbilt, Duke published a self-help book for women, titled Finders-Keepers, in 1976. The publication gives advice to women regarding vaginal exercises, fellatio, analingus, and anal sex. The manual is no longer in print and hard to find; however, the Times-Picayune, a New Orleans newspaper, managed to find a copy and trace the trail of its proceeds to the original author via the publisher. Duke compiled information from various women’s self-help magazines, and published the book to raise money for his activities, though the book turned out to be a flop.”

“Duke worked in the National Alliance Youth.

Duke served 15 months in prison for failing to file his taxes and mail fraud. He is an avid white supremacist who seeks segregation of the races. He is a rabid anti-Semite and blames the U.S. support for Israel for the attacks of September 11th.

David Duke, who spends most of his time out of the counrty ardently supports Ron Paul in his quest for the presidency. Also, according to Wikipedia and major news outlets: “On November 24, 2005, Duke visited Damascus, Syria, addressing a rally which was broadcast on Syrian television, and later giving an interview. During the rally, he referred to Israel as a “war-mongering country”, adding that “Washington, New York and London and many other capitals of the world” are “occupied by the Zionists.”

After speaking to the Syrian people, Duke was interviewed, where he said that Israel “makes the Nazi state look very, very moderate.” Syrian parliament member Muhammad Habash replied that Duke’s visit gave Syrians a “new and very positive view of the average American.”

Now…aren’t we all thankful that Duke has portrayed us in such a manner to the rest of the world?

IN DUKE’S OWN WORDS…

“What we really want to do is to be left alone. We don’t want Negroes around. We don’t need Negroes around. We’re not asking you know, we don’t want to have them, you know, for our culture. We simply want our own country and our own society. That’s in no way exploitive at all. We want our own society, our own nation….” ( Duke interview with doctoral student Evelyn Rich, who
traveled around the country with Duke while conducting
research for her dissertation on the KKK. March 1985)
“They’re trying to exterminate our race. I think, probably in a moral sense, the Jewish people have been a blight. I mean as a whole, not every Jew. And they probably deserve to go into the ashbin of history. But saying that and actually shooting or killing people in masses, are two different things. I’m not advocating extermination. I think the best thing is to resettle them in someplace where they can’t exploit others. And I don’t think they can live among themselves, I really don’t.” ( Evelyn Rich interview, February 1986)DON BLACK

Don Black runs the infamous website known as “Stormfront.” Stormfront is the first and largest hate site on the web. Black was also a Grand Wizard of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. He is close friends with David Duke in spite of the fact that Duke’s first wife is now Mrs. Don Black.

In 1981, Black was convicted of attempting an armed overthrow of the Dominican government in what was dubbed “Operation Red Dog,” or “Bayou of Pigs.” He was joined by nine other would-be mercenaries who were largely members of the Klan.
Don Black not only runs Stormfront, but he hosts, according to the Anti-Defamation League, a site called Bamboo Delight which is replete with anti-Semitic programs and pamphlets. At first glance in appears to be a cheesey website promoting Asian health aids…but look again. It is chocked full of statements such as:

“The next time you think about going to a Jewish doctor,
know the basic teaching for a Jewish physician and think twice about it.
“It is forbidden [for a Jewish doctor] to heal a non-Jew even for payment…”
an”It is forbidden to save non-Jews if they are at the point of death;
if, for example, one of them is seen falling into the sea, he should not be rescued.”

“Now do you know why diseases are never cured but only treated and treated and treated for money and more money and more money ???

“All Jewish physicians are devils. Don’t submit yourself to their swindles.”.

“Anyone who likes good food and good health should try my cooking method. But those readers who are Negroes
should immediately start using my cooking method. Because Negroes have more diseases and have shorter lives
than other people, they can immediately start regaining their Natural Rights to good health and long life that the
Junk foods of the Jewish Medical Conspiracy have robbed from them.”
And for a price, you can be the proud owner of a CD containing all of Frazier Glenn Miller’s speeches, or “Everything You Always Wanted To Know About the Jews but Were Afraid To Ask.” Or, you can order an 80 page Adobe book entitled “Jewish-Communist Brainwashing Techniques,” which will hip you to the Jewish brainwashing of Bill Clinton and Dr. Benjamin Spock.

JAMIE KELSO

Jamie Kelso is a Senior Moderator on the Stormfront forum and David Duke’s right hand man. He has been hugely successful in helping Don Black build the now Stormfront forum into the 119,000 plus members that it is today. He did this by encouraging some of the more prolific writers in the movement such as Sam Dickson, from the Council of Conservative Citizens, and Willis Carto to start posting on the forum. According to Wikipedia…

“He was the chairman of the May 2004 and May 2005 New Orleans conferences attended by a number of white nationalists, including Nick Griffin, chair of the British National Party; Jean-Michel Girard, Directeur de cabinet des affaires etrangeres of the Front National of France; and Lady Michele Renouf from the UK. Kelso lived at David Duke’s headquarters in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana during this time. He also organized an April 2004 international revisionist conference in Sacramento attended by attorney Edgar J. Steele, author of Defensive Racism; Paul Fromm, chair of the Canadian Association for Free Expression; and April Gaede and her daughters Lamb and Lynx, twin members of the band Prussian Blue.

IN JAMIE KELSO’S OWN WORDS…

“We can have peace and security only as long as we band together to preserve that most priceless possession, our inheritance of European blood.”“You always want to paint your opponents in the worst possible light,” Kelso said of antiracist activists and other Stormfront detractors. “That becomes hard to do when an organization reaches large numbers. It’s not plausible to say hundreds of thousands of people are nuts. We’re striving to be seen as our own kind of mainstream, and that we’re not kooky.”EDGAR J. STEELE

Edgar J. Steele is an anti-Semitic and racist attorney out of Sandpoint, Idaho. He is probably most well known for his defense of Richard Butler, head of Aryan Nations, in a 2000, suit that was brought about when Aryan Nation’s guards attack a woman and her son. Steele lost the case and Richard Butler lost his compound.

Currently, Steele runs a website called “Conspiracy Pen Pal,” where he posts his anti-Semitic and racist rants as well as his support for Ron Paul.

According to the Anti-Defamation League…

“Steele also regularly attacks blacks in his books, columns and speeches. He alleges the existence of a “Black-on-White race war” in the U.S., and claims that blacks have “inherited” a distinctly “African” culture of “rape…murder…violence…[and] single-parent families.” He has also called for organized opposition to African Americans in the entertainment industry, asking his readers to join him in boycotting “products advertised with black actors and models,” and “TV shows and movies with black actors.”

“Steele publishes a weekly commentary on his Web site, and his writings are also distributed widely through E-mail lists. Steele’s open association with white supremacists has become well-known, and he is a sought-after speaker at conferences of right-wing extremists, including those conducted by the National Alliance, Volksfront, and the Institute for Historical Review.”

IN EDGAR STEELE’S OWN WORDS…

“Truly the Masters of Disaster on a national scale, Jews have been ejected from society after society, down through the ages — always for the same reasons and always claiming to be the victims of unjustified persecution. Today, however, they are engineering a disaster global in its reach — their “final solution,” if you will: the New World Order. And America is their intended vehicle. America’s founders were well aware of the dangers presented by the Jewish race.” (August 25, 2003)“Join me, won’t you? Boycott products advertised with black actors and models. Make a statement: If you see black, don’t go back. Boycott TV shows and movies with black actors. Send the message that we are fed up: If we see “black, we don’t go back. Cancel your subscriptions to newspapers and magazines that push black articles, columnists and advertisements into your face. There are plenty available that don’t. Not coincidentally, those that don’t promote blacks are the same ones that actually tell the truth about other things, too. Tell them when you cancel: If we see black, we don’t go back.”“Wherever blacks are congregated in America, one observes the manifestation of their inherited behavioral response patterns, directly traceable to the behavior to be observed in African blacks. Realizing that America’s black problems are rooted in African culture goes a long way toward explaining the black-on-white race war being waged in the streets of America, the rapes, the murders, the violence, the short-term outlook, the single-parent families and so on.”

“So, what color are Jews? Jews are the color of avarice and greed. Jews are the color of deception, manipulation and the lust for power. Jews are the color of dishonesty, selfishness and heartlessness. ”

“Jews are right about anti-Semitism being a disease, you know, just as fourteenth-century Europeans were right about the nature of bubonic plague. However, just as with bubonic plague, American Jews seem not to have identified the Jewish Plague’s real carriers. But you and I know who they are. Anti-Semitism is a disease. You catch it from Jews.”

“Jews, themselves, were responsible for Adolf Hitler. There is a pattern to Jewish tyranny in country after country, you know….Hitler was the response to the pre-World-War-II Jewish takeover and pillaging of Germany, similar to how Jewish robber barons recently gutted Russia.”

“Personally, give me real skinheads any day of the week for loyalty, honesty and passion, versus the girly-man traitors now running America! I learned that many years ago when I had the honor of helping to defend your right to free speech by representing Richard Butler and the Aryan Nations in a trumped-up lawsuit designed to silence them.”

WILL WILLIAMS

Will Williams is a long time racist and activist in various organizations within the white supremacist realm. Ben Klassen, founder of the Church of the Creator and author of the “White Man’s Bible,” and other publications, wrote about Williams and his stay at Klassen’s one-time compound. According to Klassen, Willliams assaulted his girlfriend and eventually had to leave. Williams also provided security for the late William Luther Pierce, founder of the neo-Nazi National Alliance.

Williams, at one point, was a great recruiter of young people into the National Alliance as he would distribute comic books entitled “The Saga of White Will.” The publication depicted a violent attack on a Jewish kid by the hero.

With more than 30 years of racist rallies, events, and recruiting under his belt, Will Williams has decided that Ron Paul is the candidate that will best represent whites and non-Jews. With a fervor, he has been promoting Paul across hate groups on the internet and he formed a “Meet-up” group for Tennessee. Refusing to compromise his hate speech, especially against the Jewish population, Williams became a prolific poster on the Ron Paul Forums where he berated what he calls “Jewish influence” and posted the writings of Dr. William Luther Pierce and others. When challenged by one supporter, Williams had this to say:

“It’s clear that proofs of anything mean nothing to you — right again. You must live a miserable existence trying to control everybody and what they can and can’t discuss. You’d make a compliant wage slave pushing mind slop at the Disney Corp, or maybe at the civil rights division of the DOJ enforcing hate speech statutes, locking away thought criminals like myself. I’m surprised you are attracted to Dr. Paul with your severely restricted view of what’s allowable under the First Amendment. It’s unpopular speech, dissident speech — Politically Incorrect speech, if you will — for which our founding fathers provided the highest protection. Those protections have been seriously eroded and I will talk about this and about who abrogated these sacred personal liberties until I’m gagged by thought police like you and whomever you whine to, or killed.”

Adam Holland has written extensively about Williams and some of the other racists behind the Paul campaign.

IN WILL WILLIAMS OWN WORDS…

“I’m currently reading _Stalin and his Hangmen – the Tyrant and Those who Killed for Him_, by Donald Rayfield. Our Ally in WWII, “Uncle Joe” Stalin, and his buddies like Beria and Kagonovich and all those other nice Jewish boys, made Mr. Hitler look like a girl scout when it came to mass killing. One has to wonder why there are no movies about this, or TV shows, or many books for that matter, or holocaust museums, when there are literally thousands devoted to the evil Mr. Hitler and how he made lampshades and soap out of all those blameless, pious Jews who just wanted to bring to Germany and the rest of Europe what their kinsmen brought to Russia. I think it goes to what Mr. Napolean once said: “The victors write the histories.” The Jewish people certainly did win WWII, didn’t they Mr. Panken? They are sitting atop the world…or it that a powder keg?“After enough complaints from Holycause survivors I received a new plate from DMV in the mail one day, unsolicited, along with a letter instructing me to return my prized ZYKLON-B. I ignored the niggers and still have it. I had a RAHOWA! vanity plate before that, during late 80’s, early 90’s, but it didn’t raise many eyebrows back then because few knew what it meant.”Perhaps the most disturbing issue that surrounds the posts of Will Williams on the Ron Paul forums is the number of people who seem to agree with his anti-Semitism or are willing to tolerate it.

RON DOGGETT

Ron Doggett is a former Klansman and current David Duke lackey. Out of Richmond, Virginia, Doggett used to host a public access show entitled “Race and Reality.”

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center,

“In February of 2001, Doggett testified to the Virginia Senate Rules Committee in favor of maintaining the state’s unconstitutional law against interracial marriage. He pulled off an even more remarkable coup a month later, when he convinced then-Gov. Jim Gilmore, who was also then heading up the Republican National Committee, to declare May “European American Heritage and History Month” — an astounding feat given Doggett’s local notoriety. Two months later, a red-faced Gilmore rescinded his proclamation.”

IN RON DOGGETT’S OWN WORDS…

On the vandalizing of the Martin Luther King Bridge: “I not a fan of graffiti but that hit the mark.
Of course it could be argued that putting the name M.L.King on it was worse than any spray paint”

On viewing a heavily tattooed female: “I guess it will take all kinds to win this battle. Better to see that than race-mixing whore seeks ape, still funny though.”

JOHN UBELE

John Ubele is the Operations Director for the Nationalist Coalition. The Nationalist Coalition is an offshoot of the National Alliance and was formed after a shake-up following William Pierce’s death and the later incarceration of Kevin Alfred Strom on child pornography charges.

The stated purpose of the Nationalist Coalition is:

“Through a loss of self-determination due to media control by a few individuals at the top, the organization purports that white values are being lost. The media has “… enormous power to lead the American people and their government in whatever direction they choose”. With this basic position, the organization is attempting to create a network of anti non-white immigrant, volunteers to fuel their own media intervention and thus expound their own white separatist beliefs.”

Ubele is also running for office in Florida while heading up the Florida Meet-up group for Ron Paul. He has garnered some local press over the last few months because of some very anti-Semitic flyers that he has been distributing which claim that our American soldiers are dying for Israel.

John Ubele is maintaining quite a web-presence as it appears that he is trying to cover all bases. Ubele also heads the Sons of Liberty group, which claims:

“It is our hope to positively affect the political, social, and economic well being of that constituency. Through political activism, organized to educate the citizens of Florida, we intend to cause the change of our political and social institutions to the extent that they are actively respecting and promoting the interests of European Americans’ heritage, on at least a basis equal to that of any other heritage, race, or ethnicity represented in the State of Florida.”

John appears to be a well-respected member of the Ron Paul group and is very active in that campaign.

VIRGINIA ABERNETHY

Virginia Abernethy is a retired professor of psychiatry at Vanderbilt University. She has been deemed a “white supremacist,” but prefers the term “ethnic separatist.” Splitting hairs is not uncommon among racists and bigots. Vehemently opposed to immigration, Abernethy claims that “ethnic groups are more comfortable with their own kind.”

Abernethey is closely tied to the Council of Conservative Citizens and is a rabid anti-immigration proponent.

In 2004, Abernethy wrote a letter to the Washington Times which had described her as a “self-described ‘racial separtist'”. In that letter she stated, note that the nation has abandoned the motto, “e pluribus unum.” She wrote, “The goals of the multicultural game are ethnic separatism, ethnic privilege and ethnic power.” European-Americans are “late on the playing field” and need to catch up because if they don’t play the game “my family and kin will lose out”

She also served on the editorial board of The Citizen Informer, the newsletter of the Council of Conservative Citizens, a Neo-confederate organization. Abernethy regularly addresses meetings of the CofCC. She is on the editorial advisory board of The Occidental Quarterly, a pro-European-American scholarly journal of “nationalist thought and opinion.” Abernethy is on the Board of Directors of the Carrying Capacity Network, an immigration-reduction organization, and also on the Board of Population-Environment BALANCE, which advocates an immigration moratorium in order to balance population size with resources and the environment’s capacity to cope with pollution.

She likes hobnobbing with the anti-Semitic author and professor, Kevin MacDonald and, little wonder, has contributed financially to the Ron Paul campaign.

LARRY PRATT

Meet Larry Pratt, the executive director of Gun Owners of America. Now, that, in and of itself, may not be too alarming to most Americans. However, his support of Ron Paul has caused some concerns, not because of his firearm views, but because of his other activities.

Larry Pratt was the former co-chairman of the Pat Buchannan presidential campaign during which time it was alleged that Pratt had attended white supremacist and militia meetings. Pratt denied the charges but resigned to avoid bringing any controversy down on the Buchanan campaign.

In spite of Pratt’s denials, it later came to light that in 1992, he had shared the stage with Louis Beam, a virulent white supremacist, and Richard Butler, the infamous leader of Aryan Nations. Pratt addressed a three-day gathering of neo-Nazi’s, white supremacists, and Christian Identity adherents who had gathered in Estes Park, Colorado following the Ruby Ridge incident.

Larry Pratt and his organization wields a lot of lobbying power. His personal friendshipt with John Ashcroft and his membership in the secretive Council for National Policy demonstrates how deeply anti-Semitic and racist ideology have been able to penetrate the halls of U.S. government.

In a close look at Larry Platt, an article entitled “God & Guns”sums up why we should be concerned thusly:

“What makes Larry’s story interesting is his link between the idea of God and guns. Pratt is an active participant in the Religious Right movement and carries great influence as a speaker and expert on both Bible and guns. The linking of God and guns is an interesting story because most believers would consider Christians somewhat pacifists on the arms issue.“What makes Larry scary to some folks is the way in which he is able to casually walk amidst some of the most violent right wing elements of society and fit in among them as a featured speaker. Larry is not only a gun lobbyist, he works for English First and Border Patrol which are groups who demand English be the official language of the nation and that something be done about the influx of Mexican immigrants. The official complaint against Larry’s liaisons was his addressing a meeting where there were Christian Identity and Aryan Nation people working to promote armed militia.”1” Larry has written a manual promoting the militia movement and is considered an expert on militia mobilizations. Christian Identity and Aryan Nations groups are rabid White Supremacy fanatics who have a sideline of hating Jews.“Pastor Pete Peters of Colorado once invited Pratt to speak at a meeting.”2” Peters is an anti-semitic preacher who is a White Supremist and advocates the killing of homosexuals as a splendid Biblical mandate for modern America.

“Larry Pratt’s web page is http://www.gunowners.org and features many interesting points of information. One part of the page warns about the U.S. government declaring martial law from the Y2K crisis. Right wing groups suspect a secret U.N. plot to take away Americans’ weapons. Listed in Pratt’s link are some patriot/militia groups with scary positions. The sight sells several tapes on the Waco Branch Davidian event. Right wing types like Timothy McVeigh are still infuriated over government intervention in taking away the weapons of Davidian cult members. Another tape sold claims the Oklahoma City Federal Building actually exploded from an insider conspiracy. Many right wing groups claim the government actually planted the bomb in Oklahoma City. This is a common tale among the militia people who still smart from government accusations about their propaganda. Another tape has Pratt defending Militia organizations. A book is featured about Michael New who refused to serve under the U.N. banner and faced a court martial for his actions. He is a cult hero among these mindsets. Dr. Rushdoony’s books are promoted. Rushdoony is a theocracy advocate who believes the Constitution should be abandoned for what he considers Biblical Law. Rushdoony advocates the modern use of the Old Testament Law for modern governments as the only official law. Under op ed pieces, Larry blames the Colombine school massacre on the fact that God was taken out of the schools. Pratt likes to blend the idea of gun ownership with his faith in God’s law.

“Larry, who is an active Presbyterian, responds on his web sight to charges of racism. He refutes the Christian Identity theology and takes a stand against racism. He says that his Biblical faith would not allow him to be a racist.

“Pratt definitely doesn’t pay attention to whom he allows his name to be associated with. He was shown on the A&E TV network speaking at a White Supremists’ rally. He openly endorses the most right wing of politicians like Ron Paul and Steve Stockman of Texas. Pratt also has close ties with would be Congressman Randall Terry. Terry borders on the terrorists fringe with some of the things he advocates in his positions.

“Pratt spoke at the 1996 National Affairs Briefing in Memphis and his taped message was advertised through the Southern Baptist Convention Christian Life Commission magazine. Pratt seems to move quite freely between the extreme Right and the more respectable Right.

“It has been suggested that Pratt needs to be given credit for helping to organize the Religious Right in the early eighties.”4″ He has traveled overseas advocating positions with foreign governments that Religious Right advocates have sought to address in distant continents.”5” If Larry is so middle America one wonders at some of the statements and associations he is identified with. He once said we need a militia because “Anti-Christian governments such as we have in the United States cannot be counted on to keep the peace”6”. It is no secret that Pratt holds great disdain for the idea of separation of church and state.

“Pratt’s Biblical rantings ask for people to pray for Gun Owners of America because he needs God’s wisdom to continue his Godly call to keep the guns flowing.”

And while we are looking at the Religious Right as it relates to Ron Paul, let’s look at another powerful individual, supporter, and long time friend of the candidate.

GARY NORTH

Gary Kilgore North is a writer and publisher from the Christian Reconstruction movement. Best known for his predictions Y2k of gloom and doom which never materialized. He also holds a doctorate in economic history. Like Ron Paul, North propses abolishing the fractional reserve banking system and a return to the gold standard while advocating for the Austrian School of Economics.

It is important to note that Gary North has been very close to Ron Paul for decades not to mention that he served on Paul’s staff in the 1970’s. While North’s economic views often echo those of many Libertarians, it is his religious views that are of the utmost concern. As previously mentioned, North is a Christian Reconstructionist and is the son-in-law of R.J. Rushdoony who is considered the father of the reconstructionists. It is no secret that Paul is against the separation of church and state and holds some very strong views in that area and Gary North has called him the “Mahatma of Self Government.”

In article just written by Aura Bogado, she claims that…
“Paul opposes the separation of Church and State. Yes, you read correctly, he opposes it. He says there is a war on religion, and that “Through perverse court decisions and years of cultural indoctrination, the elitist, secular Left has managed to convince many in our nation that religion must be driven from public view.” We should remember that when writing about the First Amendment of the Constitution (which clearly states that “government will make no law respecting an establishment of religion”), Thomas Jefferson coined the term “separation of Church and State”. If Paul’s theocratic concepts were instituted, we would have Old Testament displays at the nation’s courthouses, and Christian prayers would be part of each child’s school day.

“His religious conservatism seems to inform his views on topics as elementary as evolution when it comes to education. When asked if he would encourage presenting so-called facts to contradict the theory of evolution in schools, he answered yes. This “alternative view” on the theory of evolution means teaching the concept of intelligent design- a pseudoscience which real scientists dismiss as another attempt to once again introduce creationism into public classrooms. No thank you. Intelligent design may have its place in church, on the street or at home, but in terms of science, it doesn’t propose any hypotheses which can be tested through experiment; it’s simply not science.”

So, what about this “Christian Conservatism?” I’ll let Gary North explain his views in the following quotes:

“It is only in a period of civil impotence that Christians are under the rule to “resist not evil” (Matt. 5:39). When Christians are given power in civil affairs, the situation is different, and another rule is imposed: “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). The same holds true for the devil’s disciples. Martin Luther once saw the devil, or something he thought was the devil, and hurled an inkwell at him. He had other suggestions, even more earthly, as to how we should handle the devil. That should be the attitude of all Christians who possess authority. We pay the bribe until the day that God’s adversaries lose power, but not one day longer.” (Gary North, “In Defense of Biblical Bribery,” in R.J. Rushdoony, The Institutes of Biblical Law (Nutley, NJ: Craig Press, 1973), p. 846.)“Furthermore, there is that other great, intolerable evil of the New England Puritans: the Puritans took land away from the “native Americans.” You know, the Indians. (Liberals have adopted the phrase “native Americans” in recent years. They never, ever say “American natives,” since this is only one step away from “American savages,” which is precisely what most of those demon-worshipping, Negro slave-holding, frequently land-polluting people were…. This was one of the great sins in American life, they say: “the stealing of Indian lands”…. That a million savages had a legitimate legal claim on the whole of North America north of Mexico is the unstated assumption of such critics. They never ask the question: From whom did the Indians of early colonial America get the land? They also never ask the even more pertinent question: Was the advent of the European in North America a righteous historical judgment of God against the Indians? On the contrary, our three authors [Noll, Hatch, Marsden] ridicule the Puritans for having suggested that the Indians were the moral and covenantal equivalent of the Canaanites (p. 33). In fact, if ever a continent of covenant-breakers deserved this attribution, the “native Americans” did.” (Gary North, Political Polytheism: The Myth of Pluralism (Tyler, TX: Institute for Christian Economics, 1989), pp. 257-258)“The long-term goal of Christians in politics should be to gain exclusive control over the franchise. Those who refuse to submit publicly to the eternal sanctions of God by submitting to His Church’s public marks of the covenant–baptism and holy communion–must be denied citizenship, just as they were in ancient Israel. ” (Gary North, Political Polytheism: The Myth of Pluralism (Tyler, TX: Institute for “The question eventually must be raised: Is it a criminal offense to take the name of the Lord in vain? When people curse their parents, it unquestionably is a capital crime (Ex. 21:17). The son or daughter is under the lawful jurisdiction of the family. The integrity of the family must be maintained by the threat of death. Clearly, cursing God (blasphemy) is a comparable crime, and is therefore a capital crime (Lev. 24:16).”Christian Economics, 1989), p. 87.)

(On Modern Israel)
“There is only one Bride; God is not a bigamist. He took no gentile wife under the Old Covenant, and He will not accept a pale imitation of Old Covenant Israel – modern Judaism – as His wife in the future. Gentiles could become part of God’s Bride in the Old Covenant only by abandoning their national gods and accepting the God of the Israelites, as Shechem did, by circumcision (Genesis 34). Today, the same rule applies in the New Covenant era: Jews can become part of the Bride only by abandoning their Judaism by being baptized. God is not a bigamist.” (Gary North, The Judeo-Christian Tradition: A Guide for the Perplexed (Tyler, TX: Institute for Christian Economics, 1990), pp. 16-17.)

NOTE: Sounds like Gary North and Ann Coulter are soul mates when it comes to Jews.

“Let’s get this straight: Christian reconstruction depends on majority rule. More than this; it depends on overwhelming acceptance of the biblical covenant, perhaps as high as the 80% range of adult acceptance. In the initial stages of the Constitutional reform movement, such as today, Christians are under the civil rule of the majority. We must work within a covenantally alien system, and we must do so peacefully.” (Gary North, Political Polytheism, p. 586.)

The Bible does not allow the imposition of some sort of top-down bureaucratic tyranny in the name of Christ. The kingdom of God requires a bottom-up society. The bottom-up Christian society rests ultimately on the doctrine of self-government under God, with God’s law as the publicly revealed standard of performance. It is the humanists’ view of society that promotes top-down bureaucratic power. …”

“…still another form of masochism is “burden-bearing.” The burden-bearer will play the role of public saint in order to atone for private guilt. The more unpleasant the public role, the more desirable its function for purposes of atonement. As a result, the guilty rich will indulge in philanthropy, and the guilty white men will show “love” and “concern” for Negroes and other such persons who are in actuality repulsive and intolerable to them….”

…AND…FROM GARY NORTH’S MENTOR, R.J. RUSHDOONY:
“A contrary development is increasingly in evidence in the Western world, and especially in the United States, i.e., the development by systematic indoctrination of a bad conscience. The political cultivation of guilt is a central means to power, for guilty men are slaves; their conscience is in bondage, and hence they are easily made objects of control. Guilt is thus systematically taught for purposes of control. Several instances can be cited readily. For example, the white man is being systematically indoctrinated into believing that he is guilty of enslaving and abusing the Negro. Granted that some Negroes were mistreated as slaves, the fact still remains that nowhere in all history or in the world today has the Negro been better off. The life expectancy of the Negro increased when he was transported to America. He was not taken from freedom into slavery, but from a vicious slavery to degenerate chiefs to a generally benevolent slavery in the United States. There is not the slightest evidence that any American Negro had ever lived in a “free society” in Africa; even the idea did not exist in Africa. The move from Africa to America was a vast increase of freedom for the Negro, materially and spiritually as well as personally. The Negroes were sold from a harsh slavery into a milder one. Slavery was basic to the African way of life, to the point that slaves were the actual money of the African economy. Elsewhere, gold and silver served as money; in Africa, it was slaves….

“The private ownership of slave labor in the American South has been the subject of extensive distortion. The Negroes were slaves to their tribal heads in Africa, or prisoner-slaves of other tribes. The monetary unit in black Africa was man, the slave. The Negro moved from an especially harsh slavery, which included cannibalism, to a milder form. Much is said about the horrors of the slave ships, many of which were very bad, but it is important to remember that slaves were valuable cargo and hence property normally handled with consideration. A Canadian legislative commission member in 1847 reported that the Irish immigrants were being transported on ships loaded with twice as many passengers as the ship should hold, huddled down between decks, with too little food and water, and in conditions “as bad as the slave trade.” The condition of the Irish immigrants on arrival was far worse than that of slaves: they had no master to feed and clothe them or to provide shelter. The Irish moved from semi-slavery in Ireland to freedom in America only a few years before the Negro gained emancipation. After a century and a quarter, or less, the Irish are a leading power in the United States, and the Negroes remain on the lowest strata. The basic difference between the Irish and the Negro has not been color: it has been character. The Negroes demand more aid, i.e., more slavery and slave-care, and dwell on their sufferings. The Irish have instead looked to the present and future and helped shape America. It is a significant difference that cannot be explained altogether by color or environment. The Chinese also came to the United States under very difficult circumstances and similarly overcame them.” (R.J. Rushdoony, Politics of Guilt and Pity (Fairfax, VA: Thoburn Press, [1970] 1978), pp 3-4, 19, 25.)

Again, I want to reiterate that not ALL supporters of Ron Paul fit into the mindsets of those profiled in this article. As a matter of fact, the biggest majority of them do not. It is also important to note that those mentioned here are but the tip pf the proverbial iceberg when it comes to who is supporting Dr. Paul.

All of those mentioned above and others unmentioned have the right to support the candidate of their choice. That is not what is being questioned. What is being asked is why there are so many racist and anti-Semitic people throwing in behind Paul. What is his attratction to this particular group? And, even more pressing, why is Ron Paul not speaking out against the racism and anti-Semitism that is being associated with his campaign? Why the silence?

As someone who fervently wants to see the United States of America delivered from the hands of one of the most corrupt and hateful administrations in modern history, I also don’t care too much about going from the frying pan into the fire. A candidate that allows himself to be associated with known racists and bigots and who graces such radio shows as “Political Cesspool” with his presence really has issues that need to be addressed.

America is a multicultural haven that has managed to somehow overcome many adversities. It’s not perfect and our struggle toward equality and peace is ongoing. Imagine, if you will, replacing a hateful and bigoted regime with another radical right-winger who has the support of people such as those outlined above. I don’t even want to go there. I hope you don’t either.

Something is amiss with a candidate who refuses to step to the plate and, not only, refuse to be associated with racists and anti-Semites, but condemn that ideology as well. I am, personally, revolted by Ron Paul’s tacit acceptance of support from these groups. I find it an affront to all things American. I find it, at the very least, a dismal statement that we can actually even consider such a person for the presidency.

Fred Phelps Abused His Children?

BALTIMORE –
The Rev. Fred Phelps brainwashed his family and will keep trying to brainwash America with his anti-gay pickets at military funerals, his estranged son said.

A federal jury’s nearly $11 million judgment against Westboro Baptist Church won’t stop members from spreading their message of hate, said Nate Phelps.

“I think my old man has enough experience under the law, and he’s going to fight this,” said Phelps, who left his family and their church nearly 30 years ago.

Nate Phelps, 48, describes a violent childhood, in which he alleges his father beat him and his 12 siblings.

Nate Phelps, now living in British Columbia, Canada, has exchanged e-mails with Albert Snyder, the father of the fallen Marine who successfully sued the fundamentalist fringe group for invasion of privacy and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

“I’ve seen a couple demonstrations of just how profoundly their protests affect people, and when you get into the emotions of picketing funerals, it’s pretty intense,” Snyder said.

Westboro members picketed the Westminster funeral of Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, Albert’s son, in March 2006, with signs reading “Thank God for dead soldiers.”

Others hurt by the Topeka, Kan., church hold out hope that the multimillion-dollar penalties will cripple the church.

Clergy welcomed the news of the lawsuit’s success.

“That kind of thing is an embarrassment to most Baptists,” said Robert Myers, pastor of Arundel Baptist Church in Gambrills.

And in Topeka, many saw the judgment as a victory.

Fred Phelps gives the entire town a bad name, said the Rev. Dan Davidson, pastor of St. David’s Episcopal Church in Topeka, where Westboro has picketed every weekend service for at least 15 years.

JUDGMENT DAY FOR THE WESTBORO BAPTIST CHURCH

JUDGMENT DAY FOR WESTBORO BAPTIST CHURCH

“Absolutely, don’t you understand this was an act in futility?” replied Shirlery-Phelps Roper, daughter of the Founder of the Westboro Baptist Church, when asked if the group intended to continue picketing the funerals of dead soldiers.

Protesting funerals has become the Church’s way of garnering media attention in their fight against homosexuality. Blaming the deaths of our soldiers on the U.S. military’s policy of “don’t ask – don’t tell,” which allows gays in the military, they take to the funeral procession route and carry signs reading, “Thank God For Dead Soldiers,” and “God Hates You,” among others.

On October 31, a jury awarded the father of a fallen soldier almost $11 million. According to preliminary reports, the assets of the church, including property, homes, cars, bank accounts, etc. don’t even equal one million dollars.

Fred Phelps, founder of the Church indicated that the judgment will be appealed and told reporters, “…it will take about five minutes to get that thing reversed.”

While many are applauding the jury and the court, others are speculating on what this means as far as First Amendment Rights are concerned. Given the leniency that the courts have historically displayed on Freedom of Speech issues and the current climate regarding racial extremes which have been recently exhibited, it will be interesting to see how the scenario unfolds.

Should this matter be appealed, and the decision upheld, it would certainly set a precedent for others who have been threatened and intimidated by racists and bigots to utilize the judicial system for redress.

Could the victims, let’s say, of Hal Turner, racist radio talk show host, sue Mr. Turner for publishing their home addresses and calling for others to assassinate them, bring a similar suit against Mr. Turner?

Would municipalities have a cause of action against hate groups who threaten to bankrupt them unless their demands are met?

The picketing of funerals is beyond the pale. The messages displayed to grieving families and friends by this group of bigoted and hateful individuals cause great anguish to those already suffering. Fred Phelps and his cult are reprehensible beyond belief. All of this makes it very difficult to maintain one’s equilibrium and objectivity. Additionally, an appellate decision, one way or the other, will have far-reaching implications for the future.
